Chronic Fatigue syndrome

Do you know that? You have just had an infection behind you - nothing wild, maybe flu or a virus. You think it's slowly going uphill again. But instead you stay back. Your body feels heavy, the muscles hurt, every little exertion knocks you around - and for weeks or even months.

For many, it begins with chronic Fatigue syndrome (CFS for short). A serious, previously little understood disease in which the nervous system and the immune system get out of balance. And the bad thing: many affected people can hardly work or take part in normal life - because their body simply no longer participates. Around 250,000 to 300,000 people in Germany live with CFS, including around 40,000 children and adolescents. And after Corona pandemic, it is assumed that this number could double. Because both the virus and the vaccination can be triggers. Conventional medicine is currently still at a loss when it comes to the causes or targeted therapies. Many still think CFS is a purely psychological problem. Current research - like that of the Charité Berlin around Prof. Carmen Scheibenbogen - shows very clearly: CFS is a serious physical illness that can also be demonstrated by objective tests.

But: In naturopathy and complementary medicine there are a number of approaches that help many to get along better with the symptoms - and sometimes even make real progress!

How does CFS arise?

The answer to this in advance: You don't really know why exactly someone falls ill with CFS. But there are a few plausible theories. Sometimes it may start with an infection. Some remember flu or an infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Herpesviren or the Corona virus. Dengue, chlamydia, borrelia or coxsackie viruses can also be preceded. But it's not just about pathogens: chronic stress, hormonal disorders, a weakened immune system or genetic predispositions are often involved.

For some in the body, something permanent happens through such triggers: the vessels no longer work as they should, hardly expand, the blood flow - especially in the brain - becomes a carrier. Even the platelets are more active than usual, which disturbs the blood circulation, especially in the smallest vessels. The immune system also comes into play: it can start to attack yourself - especially the nervous system. The result is a mix of symptoms that affect many areas of life: circulation, nerves, hormones, energy balance - the whole body is affected by CFS.

CFS, mast cells and histamine

Mast cells are components of your immune system that are packed with over 200 messenger substances such as histamine, heparin or certain enzymes. As soon as your body reacts to something that classifies it as dangerous - such as viruses, bacteria, allergens or stress - mast cells release these substances and thus trigger an inflammatory reaction. Histamine often triggers the symptoms of your histamine intolerance to you! The mast cells are therefore not only in direct connection with CFS, but also with histamine intolerance. Mast cells can be activated immediately (e.g. with allergies) or delayed time. And that happens not only through infections or medication, but also through cold, heat or mental stress. For certain diseases, the body produces too many or changed mast cells - this can lead to an excess of inflammatory messenger substances. The result: chronic inflammation. These often run "quiet" - so -called silent inflammations do not show classic symptoms such as fever or swelling, but permanently strain your immune system. In the long run, your body lacks the energy for other defense processes, such as viruses or pollutants. Mast cells can also trigger autoimmune processes in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissue. This cannot be confused with allergies - there the body reacts exaggerated to actually harmless fabrics.

Due to this constant stress, your body will eventually switch to the "Sickness Behavior" mode-a biological savings program: you feel tired, without drive, appetizing, maybe get migraines or joint pain. And that can also result in CFS.

The good news: Mast cell research opens up new ways in the therapy of CFS - by targeting these silent inflammation and mast cell activation.

Possible symptoms

What makes CFS so particularly difficult is a symptom that you may know yourself: the so-called post-exertional malaise-in German: a deterioration after effort. And this does not mean that you are simply exhausted. Even small activities - such as showers, a conversation or a short walk - can lead to your body "switching off" completely. This feeling is also called a "crash". He often comes with a little delay - sometimes only the next day - and then lasts hours, days or even longer.

Typical symptoms in this phase are:
• Extreme weakness
• muscle pain
• Flu -like symptoms such as sore throat or swollen lymph nodes
• gastrointestinal problems
• Dizziness, rapid heartbeat, concentration problems ("brain fog")
• Sleep disorders - despite leading fatigue

Some describe it like this: "I feel like driving over a truck - without having done anything." How much the disease is going is very different. Not all experience CFS the same. Some start with slight to medium symptoms, and there is hope that the condition will stabilize or improve over time - one then also speaks of chronic exhaustion syndrome. However, others have a difficult course from the start. A conversation can be too much for them, many can hardly leave the house or no longer. About half of all those affected are unable to work, and around a quarter is so severely restricted that they are completely bound to home.

CFS is not imagined, not "only mentally", not laziness or exaggeration. It is a real, profound physical illness that turns everyday life upside down. And: you are not alone with it. Even if there is no healing so far, knowledge grows - and therefore hope. It is important that you feel taken seriously. And that you get the support you need - medically, emotionally and in everyday life.

How is CFS diagnosed?

Here it gets tricky. Unfortunately, not many doctors with CFS are really familiar with - diagnoses are often made late or not at all. However, there are specialized contact points, for example at the Charité in Berlin or in Munich for children and young people. The diagnosis takes time - and a lot of care. It is important to rule out other diseases that make similar symptoms, such as autoimmune diseases, neurological diseases or cancer. Only when typical complaints exist for a long time will CFS be considered.

The diagnosis includes a detailed survey, physical examination and laboratory diagnostics. Special tests provide a few information: for example, the measurement of the manual (which is often significantly reduced), certain inflammatory values such as interleukin-8 or increased autoantibodies. The hormone NT-Zrobnp can also be increased in severely affected people if the oxygen supply to the muscles no longer works properly. The big problem: So far, there has been no clear laboratory value that CFS certainly proves. That is why the diagnosis often remains a puzzle - and needs experts who have the whole picture in view. Often even more movement is advised - a well -intentioned advice, but it does the opposite for many. Because even a short walk can lead to "crash" at CFS - to complete exhaustion.

Therefore, it is all the more important that you learn to hold well with your energy. Keyword: pacing. That means watching yourself well, listening to warning signals and dividing your strength in such a way that you don't keep going across your limits. Sounds simple, but it is not - but it gets easier with practice. A diary can help you recognize patterns.

Holistic approaches

In addition to classic conventional medicine, holistic ways can also be taken as a supplement.

✅ Find a therapist
Fortunately, there are more and more therapists who specialize in CFS. Search promptly for a suitable therapist for you in order not to waste time and soon be able to take a path of recovery again.

✅Movement, but gentle
Movement can be helpful - but only if it is properly dosed. Short walks, forest bathing, light yoga (like Yin Yoga) or Qigong can gently stimulate the circulation and calm the nervous system. Even if you are too exhausted to walk, it can help just sit in the countryside, breathe deeply and listen to the birds.

✅ Nutrition & intestinal health
A low -inflammatory diet - as fresh as possible, plant -based and without unnecessary additives - is often worth gold. Many affected people benefit from green vegetables, fresh juices or smoothies (if tolerated). The intestine also plays a role at CFS. A healthy intestine strengthens your immune system - that is why it can make sense to specifically support your intestinal flora and pay attention to intolerance. Maybe you already know our bacteria sensitive? These support your intestine and are also suitable for histamine intolerance.

✅ detoxification
Especially after infections or vaccination loads, it is worth maintaining the detoxification organs: liver, kidneys, lymphatic system. Herbal teas (such as our bitter herbs tea), liver wrap, preparations with duk thistle or other special natural remedies help many to gently relieve the body.

✅sleep well
Unfortunately, sleep problems are almost always part of it. In order to calm down better, you can work with small rituals: fixed bed times, lavender tea, a foot bath, gentle music or meditation before falling asleep. Natural means such as melatonin or passion flower can also help. Before you take preparations, discuss this in advance with your therapist.

✅Micronutrients
A lack of certain vitamins and minerals can make symptoms worse. Therefore, targeted laboratory diagnostics is worthwhile. Important are z. B. vitamin D, B vitamins, magnesium, iron (ferritin), omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10 or zinc. The following also applies here: no self -medication, but individual advice.

✅Adaptogens
Plant substances such as rose root, Ashwagandha or ginseng can strengthen the adaptability of the body, regulate the immune system and help to deal with stress better. Especially with strong exhaustion or after infections, many report noticeable effects - here too: Discuss with the therapist and observe their own tolerance limits!

✅Traditional Chinese medicine
Acupuncture - especially on the ears - can help with pain, sleep problems and energy. A few sessions are sometimes enough to give positive impulses.

✅Nervous system work
For many people with CFS, part of the nervous system that automatically controls organs does not work properly. Two important messenger substances - noradrenaline and acetylcholine - can no longer transmit their signals well. As a result, blood vessels, the immune system and many other body functions get out of balance. That is why special techniques such as breathing exercises can be helpful.

And even if CFS is not a mental illness, your mental health must not fall down in the back. Because stress, concerns and pressure can increase the symptoms. Conversation therapy, careful accompaniment or simply a loving look at yourself are important. What is good for you? Which people give you strength? What does you get joy - despite everything? Small things that touch your heart are not a minor matter. You are part of your healing.
