Long Covid - an undiscovered McAS?
Long Covid is now a widespread phenomenon. About 10-20% of all Corona suffered from the course of the disease from health impairments. These can last for several weeks, months or even more than a year after the corona disease. However, there are now also those affected who complain about long-covid after vaccination. How many people are actually affected after vaccination is still unclear.
What is long-covid and when does it occur?
One speaks of long-covid when no full recovery occurs several weeks after the Covid 19 infection and showing a steadily recurring or even chronic symptoms among those affected. (1) Long Covid does not necessarily develop at the beginning of the infection. After about 10-12 days of Corona disease, an inflammatory reaction (activation of the mast cells) occurs again. This is often the time when Long Covid develops. The risk of Long Covid increases with older age and with the number of previous illnesses, but young healthy people can also be affected.
In most cases, the symptoms of Long Covid are expressed in:
• Exhaustion syndrome (2) and chronic tiredness
• shortness of breath
• Heady joint and muscle pain
• Concentration disorders and memory problems, Brain Fog
• Psychological problems (depression)
• persistent odor and taste loss or disorders
• gastrointestinal complaints
• Heart infections, cardiac arrhythmias
• Sleep disorders, strong PMS
We already know from other viral diseases that they can trigger exhaustion. Inflammatory reactions play a crucial role here. The Corona virus also triggers an autoimmune reaction that can last beyond the actual disease. This leads to excessive inflammatory reactions with overactivation of the mast cells and increased cytokin and histamine release. In this way, histamine intolerance or mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) can be triggered or arise.
The causes of Long Covid
There is still a lot of research about the causes, because there is not much known about it at the moment. One approach is that Long Covid is an MCAS that escalates through the infection or vaccination. But also the reactivation of a latent Epstein-Barr virus infection, the remaining virus residues in the body or minor damage to the organs or circulatory disorders, triggered by the spike protein, other causes can be. In our article we would like to examine the cause of the MCAS
What is a McAS
Mastzell activation syndrome (MCAS) is a chronic multi-system disease with inflammatory and allergic components, which is widespread in Germany in 17 % of the population (Molderings et al., 2013).
With the MCAS, the mast cells are pathologically changed. Mast cells are cells of the immune system and help combat infection. She First react to a threat from outside and Pour numerous different fabrics. Included Create inflammatory herds, to start the immune system. Actually a very good and vital thing. But In the MCAS, the mast cells react hyper -sensitive On any stimuli and Pours out too much histamine and other inflammatory mediators in an uncontrolled and chaotic. The mast cells are through Environmental factors, allergens, food, infections, various medication, alcohol and physical exertion and stress triggered. This leads to a variety of symptoms, although there is no uniform symptoms. The symptoms can be like allergy, lifestyle poisoning or a cold. The key symptoms of a MCAS are Urtikaria (hives), gastrointestinal complaints, cardiovascular complaints, respiratory problems, headaches, strong PMS, sleep disorders, panic attacks or cardiac rhythm disorders.
Mostly one occurs Combination of the symptoms mentioned On and those affected have the feeling that the whole body no longer seems to work properly. The symptoms often resemble those of histamine intolerance. Unfortunately, the spread and meaning of MCAS (as well as that of histamine intolerance) is hardly known for many doctors and is therefore only difficult to diagnose. Often a mast cell activation syndrome is also associated with histamine intolerance. The mast cells already release so much histamine that additional histamine that is absorbed or released through food can be problematic. Certain foods can reinforce existing symptoms or overflow the histamine barrel. In return, symptoms can often be alleviated by a low -histamine diet.
Covid-19 and the mast cells
The excessive Activation of the mast cells as well as the Distribution of inflammatory mediators play a central role in both the COVID-19 infection and the corona vaccination. Many of the symptoms of a MCA are similar to those of a Covid-19 infection or the long-covid syndrome. Much of the inflammatory reactions in COVID-19 are also similar to the forms of inflammation of an MCA. (5) Mast cells therefore react to the coronavirus and pour out inflammatory mediators, cytokines and histamine. This can trigger the heaviest mast cell reactions when it comes to COVID-19 infection. So it will be one excessive immune response Triggered and a cytokine storm can then develop. In a cytokine storm, there are a number of increasing immune reactions that make the immune system exhausted. In the worst case, this reaction can become oneOrgan failure or deadly shortness of breathlead. A large number of mast cells in the lungs could be found in the autopsy of Covid-19 deceased. (3) It could also be determined that the Mast cells are increasingly active in covid-19 patients- of course depending on the severity of the disease. But also in the vaccination reaction, the same mechanisms as a immune response to spike protein, but in a easier form. Whether this is actually the case has not yet been researched, since more and more vaccinated people complain about long-covid. Normally, the activity of the mast cells goes back to the normal starting level after the covid disease. This does not seem to be the case with Long-Covid. The Mast cells remain in their abnormal activity And keep pouring histamine and other messenger substances. This leads to the symptoms mentioned above and recurring inflammatory reactions. Since mast cells are involved in almost every body organ, the variety of symptoms is very large and individual. It is therefore assumed that a covid infection allows an existing - but undiscovered - MCAS to break out. (4)
Prevention and treatment
In everyday practice, it has proven that medication that is administered in an MCAS are just as helpful for a covid disease or "medication well-set" affected by a MCAS Only very light covid courses had. The inhibition of the release of mast cell mediators is therefore crucial in the prevention and treatment of COVID 19 and long-covid. What works mast cell stabilizing?-> Antihistamines like Desloradatin and Famotidin .-> Vitamin C as a histamine gamer number 1, as well as vitamin D3 + K2 is useful. Stabilize mast cells .-> The following minerals and trace elements can also stabilize: zinc, calcium, magnesium, selenium. Preventive Can everyone Measures that support the immune systemhelp, such as Daily movement, avoidance of stress, balanced and basic nutrition, drinking a lot and sufficient sleep.

From those affected for those affected
We are Thomas and Michaela Zinser, founder of Histaminikus.
Because of the own histamine intolerance of Michaela and our son, we founded Histaminikus. The frustration does not find any suitable histamine food has spurred us to develop low -histamine food.
We would like to give you back a piece of quality of life. Feel free to look around with us.
Kind regards
