Salicylate intolerance

Salicylate intolerance (also called pain reliever or aspirin intolerance) relates to an intolerance to salicylates that occur in many foods and medication. Salicylates are natural chemicals that occur in many plants, especially in fruit, vegetables, spices and other vegetable products. They are also included in some medications such as aspirin. Although salicylate intolerance has been known for more than 100 years, it is unfortunately not perceived appropriately in medicine.

The exact frequency of this intolerance is very difficult to determine, since unfortunately it often does not diagnose and therefore remains untreated. According to estimate, approximately 0.5% - 7% of the population are affected.

Symptoms of salicyla intolerance

Symptoms arise in contact with salicylic acid, their derivatives or other related organic or inorganic acids with a similar chemical structure. As with a histamine intolerance from person to person, the symptoms are individual and can include both physical and neurological symptoms. The most common symptoms are listed below:

1. Headache or migraine: The headache can be reached from light to difficult and can be accompanied by migraines.

2. Gastrointestinal complaints: This includes abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhea, nausea, polyps in the gastrointestinal area and vomiting.

3. Skin reactions: Rashes, itching, hives (urticaria) or eczema.

4. Breathing difficulties: Breathing difficulties, asthma, rhinitis, nasal and nasal sinus polyps, bronchial asthma.

5. Fatigue and general malaise: A feeling of exhaustion, weakness and general malaise can occur.

6. Dizziness or drowsiness: Some people experience dizziness or a feeling of drowsiness in response to salicylates.

7. Washes of existing conditions: People with certain diseases such as asthma, chronic urticaria or irritable bowel syndrome can experience a deterioration in their symptoms.

As you can see, the symptoms are very similar to those of histamine intolerance. That is why these two intolerances are often confused. Salicylate intolerance can also occur in addition to histamine intolerance. Therefore, it makes sense to clarify both intolerances.

diagnosis

The diagnosis of salicylate intolerance is often excluded by excluding other causes of similar symptoms and by careful observation of the reactions to certain food and medication. It makes sense to lead a nutrition diary and to list the meticulously in which foods occur which symptoms. With a trained therapist, the presence of salicylate intolerance can be determined.

The provocation test, which may only be carried out under medical supervision, is also the gold standard for the diagnosis. A CT to determine polyps and a lung function test are also useful. In individual cases, endoscopy may also be necessary.

"The medical implementation of functional tests in vitro/exvivo is also useful. Here the doctor sends blood of the sick. The accelerated and improved diagnostics, the promising therapy to be promised faster and avoiding stress and risks for the patient and are worthwhile. required sensitivity, specificity and inpatient, outpatient, private or statutory insurance or support. Treatment

Here are a few steps recommended to treat salicylate intolerance:

1. The change in diet is the main form of therapy to reduce symptoms. According to current scientific knowledge, this includes an anti-inflammatory diet with lots of fruit, vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids. The consumption of food with a low salicylate content and the avoidance of food with a high salicylate content is also conceivable (especially in asthma, urticaria, rhinosinusitis). However, the low -salatal diet should be discussed with a nutritional therapist and put together individually, since with a permanent strict strict salicylate diet, too much fruit and vegetables are dispensed with, which is not health -promoting. At the beginning, an individual maternity period can be observed for a certain time. After that, salicylate -rich (and healthy!) Food are gradually integrated into the menu and converted to anti -inflammatory food. It is also helpful to forego heavily processed foods, since they often contain Salicylate additives and generally do not necessarily promote health.

2. Review of medication and cosmetics: People with salicyla intolerance should also avoid salicylate-containing drugs such as aspirin, certain pain relievers, some acne medication, especially COX-1 inhibitors and products with salicylic acid in skin care. So check exactly your regular medication and your cosmetic products. Tip: Celecoxib, Etoricoxib or Tilidin, e.g.

3. Medicinal treatment: Suitable drugs can be used to relieve acute symptoms. Corticosteroids (therapy with cortisone) are common therapy for salicylate intolerance. At the same time, however, these are also accompanied by numerous side effects. But antihistamines in rashes or breathing difficulties, pain relievers without salicylates for headaches and medication against gastrointestinal complaints can also be helpful. The best way to get advice from your therapist.

4. Desensitization/Deskertation: This form of therapy is primarily known from allergy studies. It is based on a dying of acetylsalicylic acid in rising quantities. Usually it begins at 5mg and increased to 100-300 mg individual administration within 2 weeks. This gift must then be taken once a day.

5. Differential diagnostics: Since many incompatible foods overlap in the following allergies, they should also be clarified in order to rule out false diagnosis: oral nickel allergy, benzoat allergy and perubalam allergy.

6. Enlightenment and self -management: Just like with histamine intolerance, you should thoroughly find out about the salicylate intolerance and research how you can adapt your lifestyle and diet to minimize symptoms.

You should avoid the following drugs with salicylate intolerance

Salicylates are included in a variety of medication, especially in pain relievers, anti -inflammatory medication and certain skin care products. Here are some examples of medication that can contain salicylates:

1. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid): Aspirin is a well -known pain reliever and anti -inflammatory medication that contains salicylates.

2. Non -steroidal anti -inflammatory medication (NSAIDS): Some NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, also contain salicylates.

3. Acne medication: Products for the treatment of acne often contain salicylic acid as an active ingredient because it can help to clarify the skin and to reduce the constipation of the pores.

4. Oral care products: Some mouthwater and toothpastes contain salicylates to combat gum infections and to clean the teeth.

5. Skin care products: Salicylic acid is often used in skin care products such as facial cleaners, peelings and acne treatments to remove dead skin cells and clean the pores. “False” personal care products can be strong symptoms.

👉🏼 It is important to read the labels of medication and skin care products carefully to ensure that they do not contain salicylates.

Salicylate intolerance and mast cells

In the meantime, it has been found that salicylate intolerance can trigger increased mast cell activities. After activating the mast cell, there is very quickly the release of messenger substances, including histamine. An increased histamine release can lead to reactions within a few minutes. People who show symptoms promptly after the consumption of salicylates and at the same time have problems with increased histamine levels should think of excessive activity of the mast cells. Mast cell stabilizers, H1 and H2 antihistamines and vitamin C can remedy this.
