The diagnosis of histamine intolerance
The diagnosis of histamine intolerance needs a precise survey on the symptoms. Several factors must be considered in the event of a diagnosis in order to be able to make a final diagnosis.
Some diagnostic options are to be shown below. It is advisable to work with an experienced therapist or nutritional advice. Unfortunately, 90% of the doctor still does not have the subject of histamine intolerance on the agenda. That is why those affected have often had years of suffering behind them before a diagnosis is finally made.
In the directory of therapists section, we listed therapists who take the topic of histamine tolerance seriously and can make a diagnosis through tests. We will always expand the directory.
Diagnostic procedure
Exact anamnesis
Since the symptoms of histamine intolerance are very diverse, a detailed medical history of symptoms and their trigger are required.
In this context, other gastrointestinal diseases and allergies should also be clarified. Allergological clarification to the exclusion of food allergies should also be made. In addition, the exclusion of mastocytosis is recommended as the cause of the symptoms.
Correct diagnosis can only be made if the following applies:
- At least two symptoms of a histamine intolerance are available
- An improvement in symptoms from low -histamine diet
- Improvement of the symptoms by taking antihistamines.
It is also recommended to carry a nutrition diary by the person concerned. Based on the symptoms, a therapist can recognize foods that trigger the symptoms.
Laboratory diagnostics
Determination dao and histamine value
Blood tests: Histaming content in the heparin blood, dao activity in serum blood
The lowered concentration of the enzyme dao in the serum can be measured with a blood test. However, it is unclear whether the given guidelines really correct for practice. Allergists have come to a different conclusion (see Kofler 08/2016). The finding of the blood test is still interesting, but is not sufficient as a sole diagnosis.
Stool tests: Histamine in the chair, dao in the chair
The histamine content and the DAO content in the intestine is measured with a stool test. You can also see from these values whether histamine intolerance is based.
It should be said that these laboratory values can only support a diagnosis. You can't rely on it alone. The simplest way to determine whether there is a histamine intolerance is to be done for 14 days. If the symptoms improve, histamine intolerance can be assumed. Laboratory diagnostics can then confirm this pre -diagnosis.
Skin test
Since 2006 there has been a simple skin test (50-Skin-Prick test) To evaluate histamine intolerance. This test can determine which substances or allergens cause the symptoms.
The allergen is placed on the inside of the forearm and then the skin is stabbed with a needle. After a few minutes, itching, redness or wheal formation occurs. If the wheal formation remains after 50 minutes, histamine intolerance can be assumed.
Oral provocation
An oral provocation should only take place under medical supervision. In this test, patients are deliberately administered histamine.
In patients with a suspected histamine intolernaz, this histamine should cause symptoms. The difficulty of this test is the optimal provocation dose. Therefore, it is questionable whether this test is suitable for hypersensitive people.
Low -histamine diet
You can easily test whether there is a histamine intolerance by eating very strictly histamine -free for 14 days. If your symptoms improve, you can assume that histamine intolerance is available. You can then have this hypothesis confirmed by the laboratory diagnostics. A list for a low -histamine diet can be found in the end of our World of knowledge.
The potato rice diet has often proven itself. However, this "diet" should only be carried out for a maximum of one week, otherwise it can lead to malnutrition. You can find instructions for the potato rice diet at the end of our World of knowledge.

From those affected for those affected
We are Thomas and Michaela Zinser, founder of Histaminikus.
Because of the own histamine intolerance of Michaela and our son, we founded Histaminikus. The frustration does not find any suitable histamine food has spurred us to develop low -histamine food.
We would like to give you back a piece of quality of life. Feel free to look around with us.
Kind regards
Thomas and Michaela
