10 widespread histamine myths

Have you already fell for it?

Various myths on the subject of histamine intolerance are still circulating on the Internet. Certainly some have already met and maybe you have even believed some myth.

So that you do not fall further on such myths, we present 10 widespread histamine myths.

Myth 1:
It's all just in your head

To date, many still think that histamine intolerance only takes place in the head and is a purely psychological problem. Now it is actually the case that histamine also affects the "head" because it is a Neurotransmitter in the brain is and thus A strong influence on our emotions, fears and the psyche has. But that's just one side of the medal. The fact is that the intestine is closely linked to the brain. One also speaks of the intestinal brain axis here. The condition of your intestine is therefore reflected in your mental health. And here we come to the other side of the medal: Histamine intolerance is a metabolic disorder that must be treated holistically. And the beginning of the therapy does not take place with a mentally to stamp those affected, but should always start in the intestine and continue to other body areas from there.

Myth 2:
Histamine intolerance is not curable

Histamine intolerance is quite curable. The prerequisite is that histamine intolerance is not genetic. This is also not the case with the majority of the patients, because genetic histamine intolerance is very rare. So there is hope. Nevertheless, there is no patent solution that fits for everyone in the treatment. Histamine intolerance is very individual and it depends on your individual causes. The treatment strategy is therefore different from person to person. In most cases, there must be different adjustment screws, from nutrition to individual behaviors to the entire lifestyle. However, the essentials remain the change in diet to quickly get symptoms under control. If you still succeed in finding the causes behind your very personal symptoms, you can achieve considerable improvements and alleviate or even overcome your symptoms.

Myth 3:
I don't have to change my diet. I just take a Daosin/daofood.

We read and hear these sentences again and again. Unfortunately, this is too short. To do this, you have to understand the mode of action of a DAO preparation. These preparations contain The enzyme dao, which is responsible for the breakdown of histamine in the intestine. The DAO preparations therefore only work in the intestine and only preventive. So it doesn't help to take a daosin after eating. The biggest problem is that DAO preparations do not work in histamine liberators or DAO inhibitors. If you take a close look at the Sighi list, you will find that most foods are histamine liberators. In addition, DAO preparations only help if your cause is a DAO deficiency. But other causes are based on you (stress, hormones, liver weakness, intestinal diseases, leaky good, etc.) then If you trigger your symptoms with every histamine -rich food And the associated organ already weakened. DAO preparations can be helpful if you suffer from a DAO deficiency or simply want to enjoy the next visit to the restaurant with fewer symptoms. However, they are not a sole treatment method and do not replace a low -histamine diet.

Myth 4:
You just have to take an antihistamine, then that already fits

Unfortunately, an antihistamine is also not a miracle pill against histamine intolerance. An antihistamine only acts against the symptoms and does not represent the causes. In addition, there is a risk of becoming dependent on it and the side effects are also not to be despised. Logically, it is more efficient to track down the actual causes and to eliminate them instead of tackling the symptoms with chemical medication. However, if you suffer from allergic symptoms, it is advisable to always have an antihistamine with you for an emergency.

Myth 5:
The symptoms only affect the intestine

One of the greatest mistakes among most doctors is that problems in an area of the body are not associated in any connection with complaints in another area. Our body is a holistic complex, everything is closely linked and often works synchronously. In the event of a food intolerance, the first focus should of course be on the intestine. Since it is a wide variety of histamine intolerance Causes it is fatal to stop at this point. Instead of looking at the symptoms purely locally, a holistic view should be preferredthat extends far into the areas of other areas of the body than just the intestine.

Myth 6:
What I do not tolerate, you don't tolerate either

Is the sentence for you: "Then you have no histamine intolerance.“Except? In forums and Facebook groups we read this sentence very often. This sentence is often thrown very aggressively to the other person. The reason for this is the assumption that each person has the same incompatibility limits and must therefore not tolerate what the other person does not tolerate. But this legality is wrong. Histamine intolerance is extremely individual, because your compatibility limits depend on various factors:

  • It depends on how full your histamine barrel is. If you have a very low -histamine for a while, you can also eat more histamine -rich foods without suffering symptoms.
  • Even with histamine liberators, it depends on whether this liberator triggers your mast cells at all. It varies from person to person. The liberator docks at one and the next one does not.
  • Outer stimuli such as fears, stress, heat and cold as well as your personal causes of histamine intolerance also play a role in the tolerance.

Myth 7:
All of my symptoms have to do with histamine intolerance

One of the greatest misunderstandings among those affected is that all symptoms of histamine intolerance are attributed. Histamine intolerance often comes accompanied by other food intolerances, allergies or other diseases. This urgently needs to be clarified in order to properly understand your symptoms. Ums like chemicals, pesticides, cosmetic products, stress, etc. can also negatively influence the organs and thus lead to the same symptoms. An important rule for you is therefore: All foods marked on the Sighi list with green are tolerated in a histamine intolerance, as they contain little histamine and few biogenic amines. So if you cannot tolerate one of these foods, you know that other causes than the histamine intolerance have to be behind it.

Myth 8:
Yeast is not tolerated

This myth is really stubborn and is difficult to get out of your mind. The reason for this myth is an old one Study from 1969that examined various contaminated yeast extracts. Due to the contamination and the use of extracts, very high histamine values came to light. In the meantime this was Study already refuted by recent studies. We have dedicated an extra blog post to the topic of "yeast". In this we have put together all the information for you. To the yeast amount

Myth 9:
Dry fruits are not tolerated

We would also like to clean up with this myth. Dry fruits from compatible types of fruit are very well tolerated with histamine intolerance. A lot needs to be taken into account: the dried fruit must be bio quality and thus Unweed and untreated be. Then dried fruit is well tolerated and also an important source of valuable minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iron and calcium.

Myth 10:
Paprika are generally not tolerated

In low -histamine cuisine, peppers are the compatible counterpart to the incompatible tomatoes. You are therefore an integral part of almost no -histamine cuisine. With the paprika, however, you should note a lot: It is important that you Only mild peppers (Yellow, orange, red peppers; paprika fine -sweet) uses and best in organic quality. Sharp varieties (Chili, Peperoni, Paprika rose -sharp) should be avoidedbecause they are rich in histamine and can irritate the intestinal mucosa. If you still have problems with peppers, then fructose intolerance or salicylate intolerance can be put behind. Paprika belong to the nightshade plants and therefore contain some substances that some people can cause problems (e.g. capsaicin and salicylic acid). You are welcome to try to use yellow or orange peppers here and to steam the peppers before consumption in a little oil over low heat. By steaming with oil, the capsaicin is withdrawn from the peppers and is therefore better tolerated. If the salicylic acid is the problem, then mild paprika powder is compatible in moderation.
