Natural help with reflux
It often starts very harmless. A slight burning sensation behind the sternum, an unpleasant belch after eating. Maybe the meal was too fat, too late or just too much. But what initially looks like a unique discomfort becomes a daily companion for many people: heartburn, acidic reflux, upper abdominal complaints. Heartburn - or more precisely the gastroesophageal reflux disease - is one of the most common complaints about the digestive tract. Around 20% of people in western countries are affected. It almost seems to be a typical disease. We'll tell you what can help!
Typical symptoms
If stomach acid flows back into the esophagus from the stomach, it can be quite uncomfortable. Typical is the burning feeling in the upper belly or directly behind the sternum. And when the acid comes up further, it scratches in the throat, sometimes even swallowing is difficult. It may be that you have to regain air, your stomach feels bloated or you often "swallow" air. Some even have to choke up smaller leftovers.
Even nausea - in some cases even vomiting - can be added. No wonder that everyday life becomes a challenge: bending down, lying flat on the back or even a stressful day can still make the symptoms worse. Sport is good - but not every sport is the right one at reflux. Prevention exercises, such as yoga or Pilates, can increase the pressure on the stomach and reinforce the discomfort. Especially when legs are tightened or abdominal muscles are heavily used, it can be really uncomfortable.

Why does that even happen?
In most cases, it is because the small muscle ring at the transition between the esophagus and stomach-the so-called lower esophagus sphincter-no longer closes. And that can have many reasons. For example:
• overweight
• Large or greasy meals
• Alcohol, coffee
• Stress or mental stress
Your esophagus is not made to come into contact with stomach acid regularly. In contrast to the stomach, which can protect itself from the aggressive acid with a protective layer of mucus, the mucous membrane of the esophagus is much more sensitive. If there is always contact with acid, it can ignite. In rare cases, this irritation can even develop cell changes-then doctors speak of the Barrett esophagus. Therefore, it is important not to take persistent complaints lightly. If you have to do these symptoms more often, it makes sense to have the whole thing medically clarified - especially if you have been taking acid blockers for two weeks or more and there is no noticeable improvement. As a rule, gastroscopy is made. A small tissue sample can also be removed to make sure that nothing is serious about it.
Already knew?
Heartburn can also arise from a lack of stomach acid, i.e. the complete opposite! Here you can find more information:

The connection with histamine intolerance
Histamine is a rather active player in your body - among other things, it ensures that your stomach produces acidity. Even if there is only a little more histamine in the body, gastric acid production really gets going. Mucus in the stomach is also more formed. Therefore, food allergies or histamine intolerance can quickly lead to irritable bowel or irritable stomach problems- feeling full of fullness, bloating, stomach pressure and also heartburn. Unfortunately, it is often happening that this is not taken seriously, especially when medical examinations like gastroscopy show nothing noticeable. Then it quickly says: "It's definitely mentally." Often there is simply an overactive histamine balance behind it. And: histamine also influences how quickly your stomach is emptied. If that runs slower than normal, the food stays in the stomach for too long - and starts to ferment. This in turn increases the histamine level even more. A real vicious cycle that can increase your symptoms.

Alternative treatment options
If you go to the doctor because of heartburn, you often get a recipe for medication such as omeprazole or pantoprazole. These so -called acid blockers are quickly prescribed, but are not always really necessary or properly used. Frequent intake - sometimes even without a clear diagnosis - unfortunately often has side effects: dizziness, headache or even mood swings. In addition, your stomach can lose its protective function because less acid also means that pathogens are easier to get through. In the long term, the risk of infections, especially the lungs. In some cases, these drugs are of course important and necessary, but sometimes alternative ways would also help.
Fortunately, there are natural methods to alleviate the symptoms sustainably - without strain on the body unnecessarily that you can test for yourself. Naturopathy not only relies on switching off symptoms, but also wants to tackle the causes.

The role of nutrition
Your menu can affect enormously how your stomach is doing. Small changes often bring noticeable relief. When the heartburn is suddenly there, simple means often help: a few sip of warm water, a piece of bread chews well, a few nuts tolerable for you - this can bruise excess acid directly.
In the long term, you should pay attention to a diet that is as base -rich and stomach -friendly. Alcohol, coffee, heavily spiced and greasy dishes, meat in large quantities or sweet industrial food - all of this can increase reflux. Things like subdued vegetables, potatoes, rice, lean meat, spelled products or oat bran are better tolerated. Flax seeds are also great: if you soak them overnight, boil them briefly and drink it warmly over the day, the mucus lay on your irritated mucous membrane like a protective film. Another good example are sweet potatoes - they bring beta -carotene and potassium, which is also good for your digestive system. With the oils, it prefers to reach rapeseed or olive oil instead of butter, lard or mayo. And instead of big meals, several small ones are often better tolerated during the day.

Movement & gentle therapies
A little movement can bring a lot - especially if you fight overweight. Even small weight losses can significantly alleviate symptoms. Walking, light cycling or swimming get the circulation going, reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Targeted training of breast and abdominal muscles can also help to strengthen the diaphragm- often the reflux improves. Osteopathy (alternative treatment method for the musculoskeletal system) is another option if you are looking for gentle manual methods. An experienced therapist can solve tensions in the abdomen through special techniques - ideally over several sessions.

Medicinal plants for stomach and nerves
With plant power, you immediately think of chamomile, lemon balm and peppermint - and rightly so. Chamomile has a calming effect on irritated mucous membranes, lemon balm and also helps you mentally come to rest, and peppermint acts against nausea. You can use it individually or as a tea mixture - preferably in a cure lasting several weeks. Malve with their mucus is also a great support. Drunk as a cold water extract, it also protects your esophagus. Important: After a week you should always take a break. The use of fig cactus in the form of chewing tablets is relatively new - combined with magnesium and calcium, it forms a kind of protective film on the mucous membrane and can work very well for many of those affected. A stomach runs or a rub -in oil also arises - especially in the evening before going to bed. As always: Discuss all therapy options with your doctor in advance and make sure that other underlying diseases that lead to your reflux are excluded!

Healing earth & base tabs
Healing simply stir in 1–2 teaspoons into water and drink - this binds excess acid in the stomach. Basen tabs can also help to balance the acid-base balance. These contain minerals such as magnesium or calcium.

Homeopathy & TCM
Classic homeopathy work individually - a detailed medical history (diagnosis) is the key here. Because your emotional balance plays a greater role in reflux than you may be true. If your nervous system remains in stress mode, it can affect the stomach. Reflux also sees traditional Chinese medicine as a sign of an imbalance in the middle. That leads us directly to the next point:

Breathing & mental calm
Many of us breathe too flat - the diaphragm cannot move properly, the stomach gets pressure and the acidity increases more easily. Abdominal breathing can work wonders here! Breathing therapy, yoga, Qigong or meditation not only bring your body to rest, but also your mind - and that has a noticeable effect on your digestive tract.
Our brain and the intestine are closely connected. If you manage to become quieter inside, your stomach also reacts more relaxed. That is why it is worthwhile to regularly question stress sources - and find new ways to deal with it better.
So if you wonder what you can do against your heartburn, take a look beyond the box of conventional medicine. Nature offers you many effective, gentle possibilities - you just have to try it out.
