Pain reliever and histamine intolerance

A guest contribution by Maximilian Wilke, pharmacist from Berlin and founder of the "Whatsin" app

Almost everyone has already taken ibuprofen, paracetamol or aspirin. No wonder, because pain relievers are among the best -selling medication in Germany. However, not all funds for all patients are equally compatible. Caution should be exercised in particular in the case of histamine intolerance. And that when choosing the right active ingredient - and the right auxiliary substances.

Talk about your brand

In addition a small digression into the pharmacy. Medications always consist of one or more active ingredients and so -called auxiliary substances. The former are important for the pharmacological effect. The latter so that a tablet holds together as a tablet, or a juice does not taste so bitter.

Why is this important for patients? Both groups of fabric- i.e. effects and aids- can have an impact on the tolerance in the case of histamine intolerance. Auxiliary substances were considered medically ineffective for a long time and only active ingredients have been attributed to possible side effects. In the meantime, however, the auxiliary substances have also been brought into the focus of investigations. And especially with histamine intolerance, the list of incompatible auxiliary substances is long.

Which pain relievers are compatible with histamine intolerance?

So now to the first important question: Which pain reliever ingredients are well tolerated in histamine intolerance and which ones are not? There is quite a wide range of fabrics for painkillers. They are used for head and joint pain, back or regulation pain. But also as long -term medication for severe, chronic pain. The selection of the fabrics ranges from slight means without a prescription to highly effective prescription substances. For people with histamine intolerance, ibuprofen and paracatemol are particularly recommended among the active ingredients. In the case of strong, prescription active ingredients, tilidine is considered to be compatible.

Nachfolgend eine Auswahl der häufigsten Schmerzmittelwirkstoffe, jeweils mit dem Hinweis, ob eine Histaminwirkung zu erwarten ist:

Metamizol / Novaminsulfonneinja, DAO-Blocker
Tilidinneinnein
Indometacinneinja, Histaminliberator
Morphinneinja, Histaminliberator

Which auxiliary materials are compatible?

It becomes a little more complex when you look at the auxiliary substances of the medication. These substances are, as described above, e.g. B. used in tablet production as a binder, but also as a preservative or as a capsule cover. The tricky is that - also as a pharmacist - you usually have to study the package insert in order to find the fabrics at all. There are also hundreds of different aids, so that an overview is difficult for experts. But caution is always required. Because a whole series of fabrics can mess the histamine balance. And even if the active ingredient - such as ibuprofen - is compatible, it can cause incompatible auxiliary substances that the drug as a whole is not tolerated and you have to switch to another company.

Is there a list of compatible medication?

There are a number of corresponding lists on the net that deal with the tolerance of medication in histamine intolerance. However, activity and auxiliary substances are mostly considered in isolation. However, since both groups of fabric groups are always used next to each other in a medication, this does not help with the selection in everyday life. The app is therefore helpful Whatsinthat is available to everyone with histamine inlerance free of charge. It helps to find histamine -free pain relievers and other medication with just a few clicks. Both and auxiliary substances are considered. If an incompatible ingredient is recognized, you can also display compatible alternatives.
