The connection between panic attacks and histamine intolerance

My story

Hello, my name is Sara Müller. Over a period of more than 15 years, I suffered from tormenting panic attacks that became so strong that I suddenly passed out on the floor. These fear accidents restricted my life considerably ...

... even simple activities such as shopping, lift driving or train driving became major challenges. For example, I stood at a supermarket fund, surrounded by people, I suddenly came across fear. My heart began to lawn and I tried to breathe calmly, but the panic was stronger. I developed fear of death and fell into flight mode so that I had to leave the shopping basket and leave the shop. To endure these intense fears was extremely stressful.

Distribution and symptoms of panic attacks

Panic attacks are widespread. It is assumed that every fifth Swiss and every fourth German is affected by an anxiety disorder. A panic attack can suddenly and without warning, triggered by certain places, stimuli or physical sensations. These attacks lead to frenzied fear and physical symptoms such as sweating, tremors, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath and fear of death. Fears of a catastrophe are based on and you think: "I will die". The body releases stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and prepares us for an emergency situation, which activates the combat or escape mechanism.

The unexpected cause of my panic attacks

Despite numerous therapies and medication, the actual trigger of my panic attacks remained a mystery for a long time. Until a doctor made a groundbreaking discovery. He not only looked at the problem of the panic attacks isolated, but my whole body and my entire disease history. He made various tests and found out: I suffer from histamine intolerance and gluten sensitivity! These intolerances were the real triggers of my panic attacks.

The role of histamine intolerance and gluten sensitivity

Heavy medication in my early childhood, such as antibiotics against pneumonia, as well as genetic predispositions brought various processes in my body out of balance. This led to histamine intolerance and later also gluten sensitivity. In teenagers, abdominal pain, unspecific allergies and asthma were added. The symptoms were treated in isolation, which made the situation worse. Finally, a damaged intestine (Leaky Gut syndrome) caused unwanted fabrics to get into the brain and caused anxiety or depression there.
With the diagnosis of histamine intolerance and gluten sensitivity, I finally found an answer to my panic attacks and the numerous visits to the doctor in my life.

👉🏼 What is gluten sensitivity?

In gluten sensitivity, there is a hypersensitivity to gluten. The symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhea, rashes, irritable bowel, anxiety disorders and depression.

The change of my life

For me it was the realization: panic attacks do not only have to have psychological causes and consequently only treated psychologically. You can also be the result of a domino effect of undiscovered food intolerance.
After the shocking diagnosis, my world stood head. I knew that I had to change my diet radically. The changeover was difficult, but necessary. In the first few days I stayed with rice, apples and cucumbers. I found that I wasn't alone. Many others feel the same way if they have to change their diet because of an intolerance.

The way to improve

What surprised me the most was the lack of combined information. No book, no recipes, no lists that took into account both histamine and gluten intolerance. So I created my own lists, found suitable recipes and discovered new sources of shopping. I learned step by step how I could combine both in my diet.
Since my diet change to low -histamine and gluten -free, I have no longer experienced panic attacks! This trip was not easy, but it was worth it. What started as a shock came to my end of the panic attacks.

My thanks to Histaminikus

Histaminikus.de was an invaluable source of information and updating on the subject of histamine intolerance at the beginning of my diagnosis. It was also a valuable resource for orders in Switzerland. I would like to thank you for the valuable information that was a great help to me during this time.

👉🏼 My conclusion

I would like to share my knowledge and experience so that nobody has to go through the long suffering that I have experienced. Panic attacks can have a variety of causes, and sometimes it is physical intolerances that offer the key to the solution. If you or someone you know suffer from panic attacks, it could be worth taking a look at possible food intolerances. The solution could be closer than you think.

I united and wrote down all my experiences and knowledge, in the recently published guide "15 years of panic attacks - the main triggers were histamine and gluten!". Available from all book stores inpatient and online.
